The aluminum reaction shell (Drum) found in the GM 10L80 and Ford 10R80 is considered by many to be the Achilles heel of 10-speed transmission longevity. The OE non-coated drums found in the F-150, Mustangs, GM 1500 Series trucks and various SUV's are notorious for clutch basket channel degradation. The interaction between the steel clutch plates and aluminum drum is non-sustainable and leads to incomplete shifts and range tie ups.
Currently, due to lack of aftermarket options, the most widely accepted repair is to replace the drum with a new OEM drum. Until now. Testing shows that converting to a hard anodized surface treated drum will increased ability to hold load and resists accelerated wear. Third party Rockwell testing indicates up to a 4 point increase in material hardness at the surface. This increase in hardness should directly correlate to an extended service life.
